I don’t think I’ve seen anyone do a post like this before, but I thought it would be an interesting one to do, as music is so personal and I think that there is still a stigma around crying. I cry for many reasons: I feel ill, I’m sad, I’m upset, I see a sad advert on tv, or sometimes none of these and my body just wants me to cry!
Music is something close to me, and I do feel it in my heart and soul (cringe). So sometimes certain songs evoke emotions in me that I can’t control! Anyway, I wanted to share with you a list of songs that I know I either could cry to, or already have done. For some of them I might give a lil backstory as to why they make me feel like crying, and I wonder whether anyone else might feel the same.
Songs I Could Cry To
- The Night We Met – Lord Huron
- Curveballs – The Wombats
- Give It All – Foals
- I See Fire – Ed Sheeran
- I Will Follow You Into The Dark – Death Cab For Cutie
- Money Power Glory – Lana Del Rey
- Somebody That I Used To Know – Gotye
- I’m With You – Avril Lavigne
Song I Have Cried To
- 5AM + I Found – Amber Run
- I Know You Care – Ellie Goulding
- The Harold Song, Dancing With Tears In My Eyes, Praying + Spaceship – Kesha
With Praying, I don’t cry because I relate to the song, but mostly because of one lyric that I find hard to sing. ‘I’m proud of who I am’ is what gets me. She sings it with her own emotion, and whilst I know she believes it, I don’t believe myself when I sing it. Sad story I know, but I just don’t feel proud of myself, and it’s almost like I’m lying by saying it.
- Just Tonight + You – The Pretty Reckless
- Hello Hello – Paramore (unreleased demo song I found on YouTube)
Oh baby, I listened to this on repeat a lot when I was younger, and I specifically remember crying to it when my ex ”broke up” with me as a way of getting my feelings out. I was also playing the Sims at the time, just cause that’s what I did back then.
- Entire Acoustic EP + You And I – PVRIS
- The End Of All Things – Panic! At The Disco
- Part Of Me – Katy Perry
- Joanne – Lady Gaga
- Beacon – Two Door Cinema Club
I can tell you when I cried to this, like two weeks ago. I was just driving home and as soon as it got to the end of the song where he sings ‘I’m coming home’ on repeat I somehow lost it and started crying. Really have no reason for this one!
- Fear and Loathing, Lies, Teen Idle, Numb, Obsessions + Happy – Marina
Please, if you have not heard ‘Happy’ before, go listen to it. I think it was slept on a bit but I really think other people should listen to it at least once to see if you like it as much as me. Now the reason why I have cried to this is because if I’m not in a ‘happy’ mood at the time, singing it feels like such a cheat when I feel the complete opposite. I do truly appreciate it though and find some peace with it.
- A LOT of Taylor Swift songs
What can I say, I went through a Taylor Swift phase! The majority of crying for this was when I ”broke up” with my ex (the first bloody time), and so ya know, it’s what had to be done. Notable mentions are ‘Sad Beautiful Tragic’, ‘Should’ve Said No’, ‘You’re Not Sorry’, and ‘Haunted’.
- Taro – Alt J
PLEASE PLEASE GO LISTEN TO THIS! It is such a beautiful song with a captivating story behind it, even leading us to name our dog after the song. It is one of my most favourite songs in the world, and whilst it is extremely sad, if you understand the story behind it you’ll see how they almost bring the characters together in the end. Please listen!
Okay I think I’m done, and for the most part I bet you’re thinking ‘what a bore’. Yeah I know, but I had to do it for myself, and to show others that it’s good to know what makes you cry, and also why. Being in touch with your emotions, or being a ‘sensitive’ person is in no way a bad thing, and actually makes you a more understanding person in the end.
Have you heard any of these songs before? What songs make you cry + why? I’d really love to see how everyones’ music tastes differ!
Love, Emily x
