How To Keep On Top Of Your Dry Skin

I’m back today with some tips to help maintain your skin for those of you who suffer from dry skin like me. These are all my personal ways that I find are helpful in keeping my skin soft and free of all that dry skin, but I hope that they may be useful for others too, especially if you’ve been looking for new things to try! Most importantly I want everyone to remember that we do not choose our skin type, or necessarily choose every bad thing that happens to it – so if you have a bad skin day, please don’t worry as I’m sure it will get better, and always go to the doctors if something is persistent or is causing you to suffer. Also, these tips can be applied to all skin types if they work for you!

I’ve found that my skin feels the softest when I keep up a good face washing routine, and that the skin around my nose in particular feels smoother than just moisturising alone. I’d recommend finding a soothing face wash that doesn’t strip your skin and leave it feeling tight – such as the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser | £15review | which is very gentle on the skin. In addition to this, it can be good to throw in some light exfoliation no more than two times a week to be on the safe side, either in the form of physical or chemical exfoliation. If like me you sometimes feel like you need to physically exfoliate, ensure that no harsh ingredients are used such as walnut shells or plastic beads, as over time these can do more damage than good. Opt for chemical exfoliation in the form of AHA’s and BHA’s the majority of the time (check out The Ordinary for some good products), and physical exfoliation every now and again.

There are also a number of tips that can be incorporated both morning and night depending on your skin needs! Firstly, make sure that once you have finished your morning skin routine you use SPF – even if it’s not sunny outside your skin is susceptible to sun damage all of the time. I’m currently loving the Unseen Sunscreen by Supergoop! | £15/£30 | review | which gives me SPF 30, and is suitable for all skin types too. Another golden product is hyaluronic acid, often found in serums, which helps your skin cells to maintain their moisture levels, leaving skin hydrated for longer. It naturally occurs in the body already, but adding in a little bit more to your morning and night routine should help to make your skin appear more plump and hydrated. A bonus is that this can also be used by all skin types, but it is especially important for those of us with dry skin.

If you need a pick me up or even just a nice pamper session, hydrating masks are the way to go. There are many you can choose from depending on your needs, such as the Tropic ‘Deep Hydration’ Mask | review | for a shorter timed mask, perfect for use before makeup or a day out, or overnight masks such as the Summer Friday’s Jet Lag Mask | £22.50/£42 | which can be used as a mask before makeup, as an overnight mask, or even as a primer for makeup. On top of this, oils are a great way to add extra hydration when you need it, either on their own or mixed in with a moisturiser which removes some of the ‘oily’ feeling. My favourite currently is the Antipodes Rosehip and Avocado Oil | £22.99 | which feels soft on the skin but not greasy or overly oily, perfect for both morning and night.

Finally, the most important part of keeping your skin in a healthy condition is to maintain a routine, and try not to use too many different products at the same time so you don’t confuse your skin. Rotating in new products every now and again can be beneficial, but most products take at least two to four weeks to show proper results – patience is key. It is also important to remember that whilst we may get dry patches of skin that just don’t seem to budge no matter what we do, there are people with oily skin who are having just as much a hard time as we are. Our skin is our skin, and only we know what works best for us – so use these tips if they are suitable for you!

  1. The Antipodes oil sounds absolutely amazing, I love that it’s not greasy too, I’m yet to find an oil that isn’t so I might give this a try. I already really want to try more products with hyaluronic acid, it really seems to make a difference! Lovely post 🙂

  2. I love this post! In terms of aesthetics – beautiful photos, girl! In terms of content, oh yes. I suffer with dry and sensitive skin and am always on a lookout for new products. I have had my eye not the glossier cleanser for a while but just was not sure about it! You have made me think it might actually be worth the buck…
